About Spinel Gems

Spinel is a mineral with a lot of history. Long mined in Sri Lanka, Afghanistan, Myanmar, Vietnam, and Thailand, Spinel garnered deep appreciation for its beauty, even winning a treasured place in a number of crown jewels.  Some of the most famous and large crown jewels are adorned with Spinel and the gem not only retains its value, it is rarer than it's cousin the ruby.  While currently an expensive stone, the increasing rarity of Spinel and mines running dry has caused the gem to steadily increase in value over the years.

One of the most famous Spinels in the world is the Black Prince’s Ruby, the 170-carat gem that adorns the U.K.’s Imperial Crown. And the Timur Ruby, also part of the British crown jewels, is actually a 361-carat polished red Spinel. The Black Prince’s Ruby is the largest uncut Spinel in the world, and once decorated King Henry V’s helmet during battle.

A Spinel ring from Cartier sold for $334,500 USD,  nearly three times the expected price, in 2019, while an imperial Spinel necklace offered by Christie’s went for more than $3 million at auction the same year

Found in a variety of colors, including red, blue, violet, and dark green

More On Appraisal Certificates

Appraisal Certificates are done from accredited appraisers and represent the retail insurance replacement value for an item.  While many companies do appraisals (such as jewelry stores), it is important to receive an appraisal by a group that does not involve themselves in the buying or selling of Gems or jewelry pieces as to avoid any conflict of interest.  We typically use AGL or GS Labs (Gemscan), accredited appraisal companies (with Global Offices) for the Jewelry industry, located in downtown Toronto.  We also have a number of Certificates from EGL a global appraisal company to the gem industry whose Toronto offices have since closed down.

An appraisal will assign a monetary value to a Gem or piece of jewelry and is ultimately subjective based on the appraiser's criteria for grading and experience.  For this reason, only accredited and experienced appraisers are used to evaluate stones.  An appraisal is not an indication of your buying power, that depends on your ability to "wheel and deal" as well as your source of supply and ability to buy in parcel lots or in bulk.

GS allows you to check Appraisal cert numbers online.
